1. Basic Identification

Common Name: Snake Plant, Mother-in-Law's Tongue, جلد النمر
Botanical Name: Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii'
Plant Variant: Laurentii
Plant Color: Multicolor (Dark green with horizontal light green banding and golden-yellow margins)
Arabic Name: جلد النمر
Stems: 3

2. Taxonomy & Classification

Family: Asparagaceae
Genus: Dracaena (formerly Sansevieria)
Species: Dracaena trifasciata
Cultivar: 'Laurentii'

3. Origin & Distribution

The Snake Plant is native to tropical West Africa, ranging from Nigeria east to the Congo. It has been cultivated globally as a popular indoor ornamental plant due to its extreme resilience.

4. Visual Characteristics

This cultivar is recognized by its stiff, sword-shaped leaves that grow vertically in a tight rosette. The leaves feature a dark green center with transverse silver-green bands and are framed by distinct, vertical yellow stripes along the edges.

5. Size & Dimensions

Indoors, the 'Laurentii' typically grows to a height of 2 to 4 feet (60–120 cm). The leaves are roughly 2.5 to 3.5 inches wide and can reach significant heights under optimal conditions.

6. Light Requirements

Very versatile. It thrives in bright, indirect light but is famously tolerant of low-light conditions. It can also handle some direct sunlight, though its growth is most robust in moderate to bright indirect light.

7. Watering Needs

Low watering needs. Allow the potting soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once every month or two. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure.

8. Soil & Potting

Requires a loose, well-draining potting soil. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal. It prefers being slightly root-bound and should be housed in a pot with adequate drainage holes.

9. Temperature & Humidity

Prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F (18°C–29°C). It is sensitive to frost and should be kept away from cold drafts. It thrives in standard household humidity and does not require misting.

10. Fertilization

Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing during the dormant winter period.

11. Maintenance & Care Level

Maintenance Level: Very Low. This plant is ideal for beginners as it requires very little attention. Maintenance is limited to wiping dust off the leaves with a damp cloth to keep pores clear.

12. Growth & Propagation

Slow growth rate. It can be propagated through rhizome division or leaf cuttings. Note that propagation via leaf cuttings may result in the loss of the yellow variegated edges in the new plantlets.

13. Common Problems

The most significant problem is root rot due to overwatering. It may occasionally face pests like mealybugs or spider mites, but it is generally pest-resistant compared to other indoor plants.

14. Benefits & Uses

Known for its air-purifying qualities, it removes toxins like formaldehyde and benzene. It is unique for its Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM), meaning it releases oxygen at night, making it an excellent choice for bedrooms.

15. Toxicity & Safety

Toxic to cats and dogs. Ingestion can cause gastrointestinal upset, including salivation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea due to the presence of saponins.
